This week, Philip Morris/Altria shareholders and top decisionmakers will gather in New Jersey for the corporation’s annual shareholders’ meeting. It’s the event of the year for the tobacco giant to brag to the financial community and media. You can bet that Corporate Accountability International will be there! Before we challenge the decisionmakers in person, we need you to email Philip Morris/Altria’s CEO, Louis Camilleri, to send a clear message that people will not stand for Big Tobacco interfering in health policy.

With 146 countries having ratified the global tobacco treaty, Philip Morris/Altria seems desperate to find ways to undermine the treaty’s implementation. Here’s one example: In August, Philip Morris asked U.S. District Court Judge Gladys Kessler if it could continue to use the “low-tar” and “light” labels outside the U.S. Just weeks earlier, Judge Kessler had barred tobacco corporations from using these false and misleading labels. Since the global tobacco treaty prohibits the use of misleading descriptors, granting Philip Morris/Altria’s request would have undermined enforcement of the treaty in ratifying countries! Fortunately, the court ruled in favor of public health.

Help us challenge Philip Morris/Altria’s key decisionmakers for the life-threatening decisions they make behind closed doors. Corporate Accountability International, our members and international allies must continue to shine a bright spotlight on the tobacco giant’s attempts to interfere with health policy!

What’s At Stake:
On April 26th, Philip Morris/Altria shareholders and top decisionmakers will gather in New Jersey for the corporation’s annual meeting. It’s the event of the year for the tobacco giant to brag to the financial community and media.

Annual meetings are the best opportunity we have each year to challenge key decisionmakers in-person about the life-threatening decisions they make behind closed doors. So, you can bet Corporate Accountability International will be there sending a clear message that Big Tobacco needs to butt out of public policy!
