Nation-wide demand in the UK for organic arable crops is at an all time high but UK self-sufficiency for organic cereals has fallen by 20% in the last 2 years with over 60% of the demand currently met by foreign imports. The Soil Association will be highlighting the market opportunities and benefits for UK farmers converting to organic production at Cereals 2008 on 11 and 12 June [1].

Phil Stocker, Soil Association director of farmer and grower relations said:
“Organic arable producers are being paid an attractive price for their crops and feed grain and protein crops stand out as being major opportunities for growth. With organic wheat prices at £300 per tonne, converting to organic arable production presents a great business opportunity for farmers looking to improve profitability and move to a sustainable farming system.”

With the autumn UK fertiliser price approaching £500 per tonne, input costs in non-organic systems have risen dramatically over the last 12 months. Organic arable production utilises crop rotations and legumes to build fertility and offers farmers a low input viable alternative.
At Cereals 2008 the Soil Association will offer a unique opportunity for organic producers and those considering conversion to meet key players from the organic arable sector including farmers, advisors and marketing specialists to discuss key topics surrounding organic arable production, supply and demand, business opportunities, marketing of organic grain and the future of the sector.

Sarah Dyke, Soil Association business development coordinator said:
“The growing demand for organic produce presents a positive outlook for organic farmers and those considering conversion especially with the rising price of farm inputs, and the doubling of the price of fuel over the last year.”
