Are you angry that asylum seekers can die in immigration detention without seeing a doctor? Do you believe that the White House’s authorization of torture is incompatible with American values? PHR is expanding our advocacy for immigrants who are detained without seeing a doctor and for detainees who are tortured without seeing a lawyer. Join with thousands of PHR supporters around the country who are promoting health and justice for people in US custody.
October 2008 is Shout Out for a Fresh Start Month at PHR. Demand that our government make a fresh start in respecting detainee human rights.
We’ll make it effective and fun for you to get involved:
Ask the researcher who gave voice to detainees tortured in US custody:
- On October 6, PHR and Participant Media will hold an exclusive pre-DVD-release screening of Standard Operating Procedure, Academy Award Winner Errol Morris’ documentary about torture, abuse and homicide at Abu Ghraib. After the screening, have your questions answered live by Mr. Morris and Farnoosh Hashemian, lead author on PHR’s ground-breaking study on medical evidence of torture by US personnel, Broken Laws Broken Lives.
Throw a party/tell your friends:
Go behind the headlines on how families are hurt by immigration raids:
- On October 16, downstairs form our offices in Harvard Square, PHR is screening Detained, an acclaimed documentary on the families affected by the March 2007 New Bedford factory raid.
As the new Chief Program Officer for Custody Programs at Physicians for Human Rights, I’m privileged to be working with you to get our country’s policies back on track. Together we can restore human rights as a core value of the United States.
If you’d like to find out more about how to get involved, you can email me at ksullivan@phrusa.org.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Sullivan
