President-Elect Obama, we’d like a word

The people have spoken. And now, we’d like a word with the President-Elect about setting a human rights agenda for the next administration. Today, record numbers of Americans turned out to vote in a historic election that has been hard-fought to the last minute. Based on reported returns and exit polls, more than one news network (including CNN, NBC and CBS) has just called the presidential race for Barack Obama, and Senator John McCain has graciously conceded, and congratulated President-Elect Barack Obama.
Hopefully, when all the votes are counted, Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs will put aside partisan politics and support the President-Elect. It is time to unite and work together on vital issues that matter to all of us, no matter how we see the best ways to solve our problems.
As America’s human rights traditions were undermined in recent years, PHR has been your voice to President George W. Bush on issues of global concern: HIV/AIDS, maternal mortality, genocide, asylum, and war crimes including torture and rape, to name a few. In a time of frustration and doubt about America’s moral standing in the world, about our ability to uphold our highest ideals of respect for human rights and the rule of law, PHR has worked with you to speak truth to power.
We have entered an era of great challenge and hope for change. It is time to join together, and restore America’s reputation as a world leader for human rights. PHR will soon be issuing a call to action to the President-Elect’s transition team urging immediate and sustained action to not only renew America’s commitment on human rights but to accept the challenge of fully engaging on all universal human rights, including the Right to Health.
Sincerely,

Frank Donaghue
P.S. Together, we will build the human rights community and advance health, dignity, and justice for all, thanks to your continued support. Please consider making a generous and tax-deductible gift today. Good night, and God bless America. Thank you.
