Friends of the Earth has just launched NuclearLie.org, the public face of our new campaign to fight the imminent resurgence of nuclear power. The campaign’s first priority is to stop President Bush’s agencies from pushing through Nevada’s proposed Yucca Mountain radioactive waste dump — particularly plans to open a rail line that would ship tons of toxic nuclear waste through pristine wildlife areas and the communities of millions of Americans.
We’ve already met with great success. Only days after we went to Nevada with experts, advertising, and organized activists, the federal Surface Transportation Board agreed to hold a hearing on the matter.
With the momentum we’ve picked up from this victory, we’ve got to stay on the offensive. And right now, we have special help: Earth Friends Wildlife Foundation, along with other generous donors, will match every dollar donated by you until December 31.
Now that we’ve put the spotlight on the Yucca Mountain debacle (read more here), we want to make sure our new administration is armed with the facts and aware of the public concern over an expansion of nuclear power.
You can help us stop the resurgence of nuclear power with a donation today that will be doubled by this generous matching grant.
Here’s our strategy:
1. Advocacy: we’re ramping up our research on all angles of nuclear expansion, and ensuring the media and elected officials are up-to-date on the facts.
2. Public Education: the public needs to know the truth about nuclear power and right now few politicians or reporters are being honest about its costs and dangers. We’re developing a media campaign to educate members of the public who are unaware about what new nuclear reactors mean to the safety of their pocketbooks and families.
3. Grassroots Activism: we’re building a network of informed activists like you in order to bring public pressure on plans to build new nuclear plants and to transport the toxic waste they produce through our communities. With your help we can reach out to more activists to counter the influence that the nuclear lobby has in Washington.
Many people don’t realize that nuclear power doesn’t make economic sense, its waste is too dangerous to ship or store, and it won’t solve global warming. Now that we have a government that will listen, we have to get the word out and engage more people to pressure the politicians to make the right decision.
Please help us to stop the resurgence of nuclear power and double the value of your contribution by donating before December 31.
Gratefully,
Brent Blackwelder
President
