The Save Happy Valley Coalition is angered but not surprised by the revelation that Solid Energy is attempting to shape climate change policy. “This is part of a concerted campaign by Solid Energy to deny responsibility for its contribution to climate change” says Save Happy Valley Coalition spokesperson, Malcolm France. “Solid Energy doesn’t want to cease its activities and has resorted to funding a report in an attempt to delay government action on emissions reductions. The government cannot deny responsibility for the action of its SOE’s.
“Solid Energy will do anything to prevent effective action being taken on climate change. We need to stop mining coal immediately and move towards greener forms of energy. Solid Energy is stuck in the last century and is desperately trying to cling onto a dirty and polluting industry.
“Carbon trading is not the solution to rising emissions from the coal industry and fossil fuel companies. We need an immediate halt to the use of coal and a move away from fossil fuels,” Malcolm says.

Don’t believe the green wash from Solid Energy, they still intend to turn Happy Valley into an open cast coal mine!
The Save Happy Valley Coalition is still in action, campaigning to protect this amazing ecological area from destruction, and the world from more coal CO2 emissions.
Come and celebrate the successful third year of occupation of Happy Valley on the West Coast of the South Island on the weekend of 24-25 January, 2009. There will be cars leaving from Christchurch and other places.
