Elephants Under Threat Again

Dear EIA Supporter, We recently wrote to you about the dramatic increase in elephant poaching since four African countries were given permission to sell their ivory to China and Japan. Unfortunately, as EIA predicted, these one off sales have provided the stimulus for the poachers to start up their business again, and consquently a new wave of ivory smuggling has begun.
Only last week, we heard that at least 5 tonnes of illegal ivory were seized on entering Vietnam, where it’s believed it would have been processed and shipped on to countries such as Thailand and China. Countries that still have a thriving trade in ivory. This seizure, thought to have originated in Tanzania, confirms our fears of an accelerating upward trend in poaching, which our sources on the ground in Africa have been reporting since the beginning of the year. |
| Our work is difficult and dangerous. Ivory smuggling is perpetuated by powereful international criminal syndicates. A succesful investigation depends on a convincing cover story, specialist equipment and brave EIA field operatives. This work does make a difference. In the past, we have stopped countries with a thriving black market in ivory from getting permission to sell their stockpiles and we can do it again with your support.
Many thanks
Mary Rice, Executive Director EIA |
